Foldable iPhone to put Apple’s release cycles in clash with Samsung

Apple's current iPhone release cycle doesn't clash with Samsung's phone launches in any meaningful way. The Galaxy S series is unveiled early in the new year and Apple doesn't have a new flagship iPhone launch around the same time.

Samsung's new foldables are launched by July/August every year while Apple doesn't come out with new iPhones until September/October. However, the equation may change next year with the arrival of Apple's first foldable iPhone.

Galaxy phones will have to compete harder for the spotlight

It's been rumored for years that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone. It's rumored to be a book-style foldable like the Galaxy Z Fold series, with a 5.7-inch cover display and a internal foldable panel that's just shy of 8-inches, according to a report by The Information.

The report also mentions that Apple will stagger its iPhone launches starting next year, with the premium iPhone 18 models and the first foldable iPhone being launched in September, and the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e models in early spring.

This release cycle would clash a lot more with Samsung's launches. New premium iPhones and the first foldable being released so soon after Samsung's typical summer foldable launch is anything but ideal, as the anticipation of particularly the first foldable iPhone ever may give some customers cause to hold off on their purchases until they see what Apple comes out with.

The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e being pushed into early spring of 2027 means that their release could clash with the Galaxy S27, as that's a release window in which Samsung's flagship phones don't have the overhang of a recent iPhone launch.

While a staggered release might help Apple maximize sales from the six different models it'll offer, it may also lead to increase competition for some of Samsung's top devices.
